A Rare Kind of Faith

Why is A Rare Kind of Faith the subject matter for this work?
When I got married in 1991, I thought I had faith. The challenges my husband and I faced—especially financially—were daunting, but we were in love and believed that if we just had faith, everything would somehow work out. We thought that if we simply believed hard enough, the numbers wouldn’t have to add up. I could still be a stay-at-home mom, like we both dreamed, and everything would fall into place.
But it didn’t.
As our situation worsened instead of improving, and as I was forced back to work after my husband lost his job, I started to question everything. Didn’t I have faith? Didn’t God care that I wanted what I thought He wanted for us, too?
For seven long years, we struggled just to make ends meet—both of us juggling multiple jobs while finishing school, constantly exhausted, constantly yearning for the day when we could finally feel normal. I’d look around and wonder: How do other families afford camcorders to capture their baby’s first steps? How do they live in nice apartments and drive decent cars? We weren’t just hungry for answers—we were literally hungry. I was 30 pounds underweight. One of our jobs was cleaning office buildings at midnight, and yes, I was genuinely excited to find food in the trash cans.
That season of hardship ignited a deeper search for understanding. I began to ask: Did I really have faith? Was there actually a God out there, like I’d always believed?
The answers did come. The search wasn’t in vain.
In the year 2000, it finally clicked. We discovered a small, but powerful shift we needed to make in the way we were applying our faith. And within just three months, our income tripled. That’s when my passion was born—to help other struggling moms and families uncover the simple, timeless truths and principles that can change everything.
God governs the universe by law. And when we unknowingly violate those laws, we miss out on blessings that are otherwise available to us.
As stated in Doctrine & Covenants 130:20–21:
“There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—
And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.”
There are divine laws that govern not just spiritual well-being, but our temporal prosperity as well—and they weren’t what I thought they were.
Before things finally shifted, we had to learn to apply a very specific kind of faith—what President Boyd K. Packer once described:
“There are two kinds of faith. One of them functions ordinarily in the life of every soul...
There is another kind of faith, rare indeed. This is the kind of faith that causes things to happen. It is the kind of faith that is worthy and prepared and unyielding, and it calls forth things that otherwise would not be...
It comes by gradual growth. It is a marvelous, even a transcendent, power, a power as real and as invisible as electricity. Directed and channeled, it has great effect.”

That is Rare Faith. And here is our Rare Faith Manifesto:
"Rare Faith can help us get what we want, but we do not use it to receive everything we want.
Its purpose is to build the Kingdom of God: helping us overcome personal challenges, helping our families thrive, finding and fulfilling our divine purpose, and serving others.
When we hit a roadblock, we use Rare Faith to stay on course. That’s what Rare Faith is for, and to be clear, that’s the only thing it’s for."
