What A Baby Elephant Can Teach You About Achieving Your Dreams

How long does it take a fetus to develop in the womb before it's ready to be born? 9 months.
How long does it take to gestate a baby elephant? 22 months (I'm glad humans don't have to be pregnant that long — eek!).
What about a baby bunny? About 30 days.
And what about your dreams?
Did you know they have finite and already defined gestation periods too, just like babies? A new gestation period isn't created every time an egg is fertilized. There's already a set gestation for human babies, for elephant babies — and the same goes for each one of your dreams. There is a finite and predetermined gestation period for our dreams.
Six months ago, I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy. I was 41 weeks and 1 day pregnant when I finally gave birth. Anyone who’s been pregnant knows those last 8 days ("the overdue days") can be absolutely excruciating. I have never experienced 8 days that dragged on so slowly in my life. Honestly, it started to feel like the baby would just absorb back into my body and I'd never get to see the fruits of all the hard work that pregnancy demands.
How often do we do the same thing with our dreams?
The good thing about a baby is that it will come, no matter how much you doubt it. Dreams, however, need a little more from us. If you’ve created a vision of what you want, have worked hard for it, and still don’t see it in the physical world yet, don’t get discouraged! It is on its way! But if you choose to stop believing, the dream will go back to non-existence (according to the Law of Perpetual Transmutation).
The beauty is that you often don’t have to wait until the very end to know the dream is coming. There's a certain point in pregnancy when a woman just knows she’s pregnant — and as the belly grows bigger and bigger, it’s as if the body itself is saying, Yes! I’m very close! It's the same way with our dreams.
Last year, when I decided I wanted to triple my income, I had NO idea how it could happen. I just kept dreaming, doing all I could, and before long, I had a business idea. As soon as the business was up and running, I could see very clearly that we would easily be able to more than triple our income. It turned out the gestation period for that goal was about one year — but by six months in, I knew without a doubt that it was going to happen soon. It felt a lot like being in the third trimester of pregnancy: there was no more questioning, just eager (and sometimes uncomfortable) anticipation.
There are a few important things to remember about the Law of Gestation when you’re working to birth your dream:
First, patience.
What would happen if a woman tried to induce labor at four months because she couldn’t wait any longer? The baby would be underdeveloped, weak, and might not survive.
The same goes for your dreams.
You don’t want something half-baked. You want your dream to be strong, fully formed, and ready to thrive long-term. Be okay — even at peace — with the finite gestation period that has already been assigned to your goal.
Also, bigger dreams don't necessarily mean longer gestation periods. Think about twins: they usually arrive at 37 weeks, not 40. Just because you're aiming for something twice as big doesn’t mean it will take twice as long!
Lastly, I think pregnancy and labor are designed to get just uncomfortable enough toward the end that you want the baby out more than you fear taking care of it. Sometimes, right before the birth — whether it’s a real baby or a dream — it gets hard and messy and overwhelming.
Don't retreat.
You can’t just walk away and forget about this dream. It’s a part of you now. And on the other side is something breathtaking.
The process of creating, gestating, and delivering a baby is invigorating, tiring, joyful, and momentous all at once. So is delivering your dreams. Have the courage to create what you want — because you can do it. You have the power!
Go now and start creating. Let the Law of Gestation work for you, and trust in the beauty of the process.
To Success!
