Bad Karma

Let’s talk about the Law of Cause and Effect. Have you ever heard of an improv comedy group called Studio C? AH! You haven’t? They are clever. Watching their sketches always gives me a good chuckle, and somehow, laughing a little always helps me feel a little better about life. (Isn’t it funny how something as simple as a laugh can improve our whole outlook?)
Studio C has a bit they do on Karma — specifically Bad Karma. They even have a catchy little jingle to go along with it. (If you were here with me, I would totally sing it for you.) There’s a female character who, every time she sees something unfortunate happen to someone else, bursts out laughing and mocking them. It's wildly rude and absolutely hilarious at the same time. For example: while biking, her friend hits a rock, falls, and breaks her leg. Instead of helping, she laughs loudly and mocks her poor friend... only to immediately hit an even bigger rock herself, crashing spectacularly and sliding down the road for a ridiculous distance. Classic Bad Karma! There’s another skit involving ice cream cones that’s just as funny — you’ll have to look it up!
Now, what do these Bad Karma sketches have to do with the Law of Cause and Effect? Everything! According to the Law of Cause and Effect, what goes around definitely comes around.
“The Law of Cause and Effect states that every cause has an effect, and every effect has a cause. Nothing happens by chance. Our actions are like perfectly obedient boomerangs: whatever we send out will return to us, BY LAW.” (Hidden Treasures, Householder)
This law is also known as the Law of the Harvest, or as many of us learned it growing up, The Golden Rule. My mom used to teach it to us by saying, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” Wise advice for everyone!
The Law of Cause and Effect reminds us that genuine kindness isn’t just a good idea — it’s a powerful force. When we show respect, honor, and kindness — to people, and honestly to all living things — it sets into motion real consequences that we often can't fully see in the moment. If we think a kind word or a small gesture is insignificant, we’re wrong! What goes around comes around isn’t just a feel-good philosophy — it’s a law. It cannot be avoided. When we are unkind, that unkindness will find its way back to us. When we are rude, disrespectful, or dishonest, the effects will return — by law. Depending on how you’re living your life, that can be either very good news… or very bad news.
I love how Leslie Householder puts it in her book Hidden Treasures: Heaven’s Astonishing Help with Your Money Matters:
“If we immediately see the results of our kindness, then it is easy to take the credit. If we are kind and generous, without expectation of a reward, then it is the Lord’s delight to involve as many people in the blessing as possible, and who can help but give him the glory when the blessing comes back from someplace unexpected?”
In other words, sometimes the consequences (good or bad) come back quickly. Other times, it might take two or even twenty transactions before the energy circles back around to us.
But make no mistake — it will come.
