Carrying a Heavy Burden? You can Still Fly.
Oct 17, 2017
A few years ago, I stepped outside my home and saw something that stopped me in my tracks. It didn’t seem possible—but there it was, right in front of me.
A massive 747 airplane flew by—so low and so slow it almost looked suspended in the air. And on its back? A space shuttle.
Now, I wasn’t anywhere near a space center. I was in the middle of Orem, Utah. The last place you'd expect to witness something like that from your front yard.
To this day, I’m amazed that a Boeing 747 can fly at all—let alone while carrying something as heavy as a space shuttle on its back.
That image stayed with me, especially during seasons of heavy financial stress. Back when the burden felt impossibly large and progress seemed out of reach, that sight served as a metaphor.
My husband and I would set a goal, feel the initial excitement, and take off toward it—only to glance over our shoulder, see the weight we were carrying, and feel instantly discouraged. It would slow our momentum. Sometimes, we’d even give up.
But what if the pilot of that 747 had done the same thing? What if, halfway to the destination, he looked back, panicked at the load, and thought, “I can’t do this—it’s too heavy. I should probably slow down, or I might crash.”
The reality is, once the laws of aerodynamics are in motion, the pilot must stay steady—maintain speed, adjust the flaps, and keep the nose up. Break the momentum, and the risk of crashing becomes real.
We eventually learned that success operates under laws just as dependable as the laws of flight. And once we started applying those principles consistently and patiently, we found that we could keep our momentum—even with heavy financial burdens on our back.
"Blessings are always granted upon obedience to the law upon which those blessings are predicated. I learned in doing surgery that all the prayers in the world could be undone by a single mistake because blessings are predicated upon obedience to laws. Therefore, if you really want a certain blessing, you’d better find out what the laws are that govern that blessing and then work on becoming obedient to those laws."
—Russell M. Nelson, Ensign, June 2005
If you want to experience prosperity, learn the laws that govern it—and then do something every day in harmony with those laws. They work just as reliably for small burdens as they do for the big ones.
Because whether you're trying to fly a paper airplane or a 747 carrying a space shuttle (figuratively speaking), the principle is the same: you have to move at the speed of flight. You need thrust. You need forward motion.
You also need to face the wind. Let it lift you instead of ducking to avoid it.
Stay consistent. Be precise. And at the right moment, you’ll arrive.
So don’t fixate on the weight. Focus on the destination. Follow the laws, and let them do the heavy lifting.
