Choose Your Rock Bottom

help with finances leslie householder’s posts overcoming adversity spiritual beliefs Oct 24, 2017

Recently, I had to write my story again—explaining how we discovered the principles I now teach and how we tripled our income in just a few months. As I wrote, I reflected on the fact that I had personally hit an emotional rock bottom just before things started to turn around.

That made me stop and think. At the time, things felt unbearably hard. But looking back, I realize now that there are many people in the world who have been far worse off than we were when we thought things couldn’t get any worse. We weren’t homeless. We weren’t in jail. No one was dying. We were just financially strapped and deeply discouraged. Prosperity seemed to elude us at every turn.

As I continued to ponder this, I recalled the many success stories I’ve heard from others. It struck me how often people mention hitting rock bottom before their breakthrough. A ball doesn’t bounce back until it hits the ground. For so many of us, real transformation doesn’t begin until we’ve reached our lowest point.

For some, rock bottom was jail. For others, it meant living in their car.

But here’s the key: Rock bottom is different for everyone.

It’s that moment when life has become so intolerable that something inside you finally looks heavenward and says, I surrender. I can’t do this anymore. Show me the way.

I had said “I can’t do this anymore” plenty of times before, but things only turned around when I truly surrendered. When those words came not from frustration or anger, but from a place of humility and openness.

For me, it was when I stopped insisting on doing things my way and became truly willing to follow the lessons the Lord had been trying to teach me all along. It meant saying, I am finally ready to listen—and to act.

It’s the moment you realize that faith requires action. That you must take a risk and put the principles of faith to the test. It’s the decision to stop dwelling on the worst-case scenario and instead cling stubbornly to hope—allowing yourself to see only the results you want.

It’s when you stop resisting out of fear of failure. If you’ve been afraid to trust, it’s when you have no other choice but to trust. It’s the moment you say, I will move my feet, do all I can, and trust—with a calm spirit—that things will work out for me. There comes a point where you have no other option. That’s your rock bottom. You numbly decide that if everything falls apart, you’ll face it when it happens. But for now, you take the next step in faith, surrendering with quiet determination.

For some, rock bottom is an empty bank account. For others, it’s maxed-out credit cards. Some don’t hit it until they’ve missed a car payment, while others don’t feel it until the repo man arrives. Some have faced repossession multiple times and still didn’t consider it rock bottom. I’ve even heard of people who, over time, have redefined what rock bottom means to them. One person, for example, now considers it anything below an $8,000 bank balance—so the moment they get close to that number, they wake up and start taking action.

No matter how successful someone becomes, no matter how much prosperity they achieve, new challenges will always arise. That’s how we grow. The key is learning to trust sooner—to let go before things have to get any worse.

So why wait? The upturn can begin now.

Let today be the day you surrender, trust, and discover how much better you can thrive when you listen to that inner voice speaking peace to your heart.

Take five minutes. Close your eyes. Picture yourself living the life you truly want. Feel it now. Then trust—things are already shifting in your favor. You can’t see it yet, but know this: Tomorrow’s events have already begun to change because of it.
