Country Bumpkin to City Girl

Moving to the city after a lifetime in the country has actually been a pretty smooth transition… except for the traffic. While I was raising my four children, anytime we made a trip to the city—whether to visit Grandma or go shopping—their dad was always the designated driver. Why? Because if Mom was driving, she’d start making up her own language!
Yes, every time I had to drive in the city, bizarre words would just fly out of my mouth. Not traditional swear words—more like spontaneous mashups of normal words that my stressed-out brain would blurt out all at once. For example, I’d panic in traffic and suddenly shout something like “frrr-upid” (a mix of “freak” and “stupid”) or “shhh-lip” (a combo of “shoot” and “flip”). My kids thought it was hilarious, but meanwhile, I was developing low-grade PTSD behind the wheel.
Not long after moving to the city, I discovered Leslie Householder’s books and programs and began learning about universal laws—especially how they can be applied to everyday life. One of the first places I started experimenting with the Law of Vibration was while driving. I realized that if I wanted miracles to show up on the freeway, I needed to calm the heck down inside.
I’ve always been a bit of a “Nervous Nelly,” so throwing me into city traffic was like pouring gasoline on anxiety. No wonder my mind painted chaotic pictures—what I was seeing on the road was exactly what I was imagining in my head. I honestly had no idea that my thoughts were creating so much of my experience until I started shifting them.
So I began to picture what I wanted to experience instead of bracing for the worst. I’d envision smooth drives on the streets of Salt Lake and, more importantly, I’d feel what I wanted to be feeling while driving. I started treating green lights like friends—expecting them not just to turn green but to stay green until I was through the intersection. I imagined feeling grateful, relaxed, and even delighted that the lights were on my side, helping me reach my destination with ease.
Even merging onto the freeway during 5:00 traffic has become a breeze! I’ve learned, through consistent practice, to calm my body and visualize gaps opening up between the cars—just enough space for me to glide in effortlessly—and the lanes parting so I can move over to the faster side. It truly feels like a miracle.
It’s easy to look at the GPS and see red and yellow lines on the onramps and immediately think, “This is going to be awful,” or “Merging is going to be so stressful.” But I’ve trained myself to think and feel differently—to expect the traffic to open just for me. And over and over again, it has. That simple mental and emotional shift has been a total game-changer. I’m beyond grateful to have learned how to consciously create the experiences I desire. It’s not magic—it’s just applying universal truths on purpose.
The only downside? My kids haven’t heard any new “Mom words” in quite a while!
