Doors Open and Close

The Law of Rhythm is the cadence, the timing, and the natural pattern in which everything unfolds. It’s easy to confuse this law with others—like the Law of Polarity, the Law of Vibration, the Law of Gestation, or even the Law of Perpetual Transmutation. So how do we distinguish this powerful law from the rest? And more importantly, how does it work with these other laws to help us bring about what we truly desire?

Another way to think of the Law of Rhythm is the old saying: “What goes up, must come down. And what goes down, must come up.” So how does that show up in our daily lives and work? I often go back to the old cliché: “When one door closes, another door opens.” I’ve stood back in awe many times, watching this law in action.

This past year, I’ve been partnering with a group to develop several large-scale business ventures. Unlike in the past where I consulted, this time I’m actually a partner. For one of these ventures, we decided to collaborate with another company in our area that manufactures in the same space. We had the management team and real estate; they had the manufacturing expertise—so we went all in on a joint venture.

In the beginning, everything felt aligned. We were all excited about the possibilities. But as we worked through the finer points of the deal, the other company decided they no longer wanted to be partners. Instead, they proposed redefining the relationship in a way that just didn’t work for us. It quickly became clear that what we had hoped for together wasn’t going to happen.

You can clearly see the Law of Polarity here—opposing outcomes in play. But here’s where the Law of Rhythm comes in: even though it felt like we were headed into a low, the rhythm would eventually carry us upward again.

We were devastated. We had already invested over a million dollars into property improvements and equipment—and creditors were circling. One door hadn’t just closed; it felt like it slammed shut in our faces. The high we’d been on had flipped, fast. But I gathered the team and said, “There has got to be someone else out there in the same business, looking for a facility and a team like ours. If we can find them in the next week or two, we’ll only lose a little time—maybe a month or two max.”

That spark of belief shifted everything. My partners were re-energized. And just days later, I connected with the owner of a similar company. He was already doing around $3 million annually and wanted to scale to ten times that amount. We offered the path. The deal we struck with him was actually better than the one before. We signed a letter of intent and got back on track almost immediately.

Now, let’s pause for a second. I want you to grab a piece of paper and draw a wavy, up-and-down line across it. You’ll see that rhythmic flow—the natural rise and fall of momentum. Now, tilt the right side of your paper upward at about a 45-degree angle. See the shift? Suddenly the “lows” aren’t really down anymore. They’re just part of the climb. Ever hit a plateau in life? That’s what you're looking at here.

Back to the story. Things went great with this new partner—at first. We were producing, generating revenue, and hitting new strides. Then we landed a major contract… and suddenly, he began acting like the previous partner. He got nervous, pulled back, and eventually we parted ways again. This one hurt even more—more time, more money, and this time, deeper personal bonds. It felt like losing family. Another dip. Or maybe just another plateau.

Most of my partners felt defeated. But I wasn’t ready to quit. I still believed we were on to something big. Then, out of nowhere, my old investment banking mentor re-entered my life. I told him everything. He walked me through ways we could pivot and come out stronger than before.

Enter the Law of Gestation: the idea that some of us are planters, some nurturers, and others harvesters. Over time, our ideas, relationships, and connections had grown roots. They had matured.

One thing I shared with my team was this: maybe we don’t need a joint venture. Maybe we already have everything we need to move forward ourselves. That realization changed everything. Suddenly, we could see our next step clearly.

And it’s paying off. Today, our project shows more promise than ever. Each so-called setback turned out to be a setup for something better. If I could map the last year, it wouldn’t look like a flat up-and-down wave. It would look like a jagged but steady climb, angled upward—about 45 degrees—just like that piece of paper.

Everything about our journey has been rhythmic. That’s the Law of Rhythm at work.
