Dream Seeds – Understanding the Law of Gender & Gestation

My grandfather is a master gardener. At 92, he still prepares the ground, plants the seeds, pulls the weeds, waters the soil, and harvests the fruits of his labor. He knows exactly when to plant each seed for the best growth, which pests can destroy which plants, when to water, and when it's time to reap the harvest. Every seed is different.

Our thoughts are a lot like seeds in a garden. Each one is unique, and they all require different conditions to thrive. Some grow quickly, while others take their time. This is what’s known as the Law of the Harvest—or the Law of Gender and Gestation. “Gender” here means that each seed is a different kind, and it will reproduce more of that same kind. “Gestation” reminds us that each seed has its own timeline—just like a baby growing in the womb. We may have an estimate, but the birth happens when it’s ready.

So when you think about your thoughts as seeds, picture them being planted and taking root. Some will sprout quickly; others need more time to mature. But one thing is certain: positive thoughts will eventually produce positive outcomes, and negative thoughts will do the same in the opposite direction.

For example, how many times have you eaten something and thought, "This is going to make me fat"? That’s a seed you just planted. Or maybe you’ve told a child, "Put on your coat or you’ll get sick!" What kind of seed is that? Sure, they might feel cold, but cold doesn’t cause sickness. That’s a belief you’re sowing.

Now think about the times you’ve planted a dream seed. Have you ever visualized the job you want? The house, the car, the relationship? Have you looked around and taken inventory of what kinds of seeds you’ve planted lately?

It’s so important to understand this principle:
"Plant your own idea seeds, and then be patient. Don’t uproot your idea seed with doubt."
Just like in nature, dreams take time. When you plant a dream and let it grow without constantly disturbing it with worry or fear, you give it the space it needs to become real.

Here’s something else I’ve learned: seeds don’t stress out. They don’t worry about where the sunlight or water will come from. They lie still and trust that the earth and God will provide. And guess what? That’s exactly how God works with us and our dreams.

Sometimes we get so tangled in the how—how we’re going to make something happen, how we’ll find the resources, how we’ll pull it off—that we forget God already has the how figured out. All we have to do is plant the seed and trust Him with the rest.

A recent example: my husband was planning to attend a seminar in California. Money was tight, and I honestly wasn’t sure how we were going to make it happen. But I knew it was important for our bigger goals, so I just trusted that it would all work out.

Originally, he was going to drive there and back, with one hotel night. About a week before the trip, he called a friend who was also attending (and who works for the company hosting the event). His friend said, "Just ride with me. I already have a rental car and hotel—covered by the company." I remember thinking, "Wow! That just saved us a ton of money!" I felt so grateful knowing the Lord had already provided the how.

But then—it got even better.

A day before they were supposed to leave, that same friend called and said,
"Would you mind flying in the company jet with the CEO and his wife instead of driving to L.A.?"

I was stunned. In all my dreaming and planning, I NEVER would’ve imagined that. I mean, fly in a personal jet? With the CEO?? That wasn’t even on my radar. But the Lord had something far bigger in mind than I ever could’ve dreamed.

That moment taught me a powerful lesson: sometimes we just need to stop trying to figure everything out. Plant the dream. Be still. Trust God with the how.

When we step back and let Him lead, He often takes us further, faster, and in ways we never thought possible. There’s a big difference between driving a car and flying in a private jet. God operates on a higher level than we do. He knows the full picture, has all the resources, and is waiting to bless us far beyond what we expect—if we’ll just let Him.
