Finding The Calm

guest posts law of relativity overcoming adversity parenting spiritual beliefs Dec 08, 2023

By Jennifer Davis

Five months ago, my daughter Lizzy underwent major surgery on her legs. Since then, I’ve been working to gather my thoughts, come to terms with everything, and keep my mindset steady as we move forward.

Recently, we saw another orthopedic surgeon—one who conducted an incredibly thorough evaluation of Lizzy and the changes in her body since her operation last November. The depth of that exam was overwhelming. It uncovered new issues we hadn’t seen coming.

Lately, I’ve found myself leaning hard on the law of relativity, which teaches that “our situations, the things that happen in our lives, are not inherently good or bad—until we compare them to something else.” It's not the situation itself, but the emotion we attach to it, that gives it meaning. This situation simply is.

Is it what we wanted for her? Not at all.
Is it a problem? Yes—and a big one.
But here’s the beautiful part: that’s actually a good thing.

The fact that this is a big problem means, by law, there must also be a big solution. Will we discover it in this life? I honestly don’t know. But I do know this: with every breath I take, I will keep moving toward that solution. I’ll move prayerfully, calmly, and persistently—because I know it’s out there. It exists.

And I know without a doubt that Heavenly Father loves Lizzy. She radiates that love everywhere she goes and shares it freely with anyone who meets her.

When I look back at the person I was a year ago, I feel such deep gratitude that I’m no longer in that place. A year ago, news like this would have had me crumpled on the floor, overcome by fear and hopelessness. I see now how harmful that response was—not just mentally, but physically. It served no purpose.

You can’t find answers when you're flat on the floor in despair. To find real solutions, you have to stay calm. You have to be patient. You have to keep walking—step by step—toward the answer you know must be there.

Learning to choose my response has been one of the most freeing things I’ve ever done.

Yes, this is hard. But I also recognize how much worse it could be. From that lens, this moment is manageable. Lizzy is healthy. She’s strong. She’s joyful. Whatever lies ahead, I know her spirit is resilient, and she won’t let anything hold her back.

I remind myself often: while her body and mind may face challenges, her spirit—that divine part of her—is 100% whole. There’s nothing missing, nothing broken. It is complete and powerful.

Leslie Householder said, "Remain calm and watch what happens." That calm has been everything for me during this journey. It’s in the stillness that solutions begin to unfold.

If there’s a problem, there’s a solution.
