Getting Out of Debt
Aug 02, 2016
If you’re struggling to stay out of debt, try this perspective on for size:
Maybe getting out of debt shouldn’t be the goal—it should be something that happens on the way to a goal.
When “getting out of debt” becomes the ultimate goal, you might unintentionally train your subconscious to stay focused on the problem—on the hole. And once it sees that you’re close to filling that hole, it can start looking for more holes to fill. With constant focus on debt—and even the rush that comes from paying it off—you can actually condition your mind to become a debt-paying machine.
But what happens when there’s no more debt to pay?
If your mind hasn’t latched onto a bigger, more exciting vision beyond the debt, it panics. It doesn’t know what to do next. So what does it do? It helps you out… by giving you more debt to pay off.
Let that sink in.
More debt, courtesy of your own subconscious mind—doing exactly what you trained it to do.
Without clear, forward-focused goal setting—and without understanding how much your word choices and emotional attachments shape your subconscious—you may find yourself stuck in an endless loop.
So, how do you break the cycle?
Cut unnecessary expenses, sure. Look for ways to increase your income, absolutely. But then try using a percentage-based approach to your strategy. Once you’re earning more than what you need for the basics, decide ahead of time how much of that extra will go toward your debt, and how much will go toward your future goals—the fun ones, the meaningful ones, the ones that light you up.
When your focus is on those kinds of goals, debt reduction becomes something that happens in the background—automatically.
