Helping You Prosper: Why I Turn Some Prospective Clients Away

articles help with finances positive thinking tips Oct 19, 2007

After people read The Jackrabbit Factor, I often get requests to be their personal coach.

Sometimes I say yes, but most of the time, I have to decline. Here’s why:

For one, I’m incredibly busy. I can only offer my personal attention to a small group of clients at a time. (I might eventually offer Group Coaching, but for now, I focus on one-on-one attention to help you achieve your goals.)

Another reason is that as a prosperity coach, I’m not here to give you the answers (this might surprise some people). I don’t tell you what to do, and I don’t take responsibility for your choices. My role is to help you uncover the answers within yourself. A lot of people who seek coaching for the first time don’t realize how much work it requires from the client. There’s a common misconception that a coach is a paid advisor who simply gives advice, but that’s not what coaching is about.

Some coaches will take you on as long as you can fog a mirror—basically, if you’re breathing, they’re happy to sign a contract. For them, it seems to be about revenue. On the other hand, there are other coaches who genuinely care about helping you make the changes you desire.

For me, I’d rather turn down the revenue than enter into a coaching relationship that isn’t a good fit. Coaching is a significant financial commitment—nearly six thousand dollars for a six-month program. It’s non-refundable, and what you get out of it is directly proportional to what you put in. Not everyone is serious enough about their success to make that kind of commitment. Honestly, formal coaching isn’t necessary for everyone, and success can be achieved without it.

To clarify what prosperity coaching is—and what it’s not—let me share that my husband and I have invested a lot of money in personal coaching across various fields, from marketing and real estate to business development and general success. In most cases, the coach’s role was to act as a guide, a sounding board, and an objective outsider. Over time, we mistakenly thought that the more we paid, the less we would have to think. After all, thinking is hard, and wouldn’t it be great to just pay for solid advice?

However, we learned that the more we paid, the more we had to apply ourselves. We had to become better at thinking for ourselves and taking responsibility for our decisions. Ultimately, those coaching experiences have been some of the best investments we’ve ever made because they helped us grow as people. Advice is useful but short-lived, whereas personal development lasts forever. Prosperity often follows as a natural result of that growth.

If $5,995 feels like too much to start with but you still want help with your goals, here’s an option: you can begin with our 12-week home study course for just $597. After completing the program, if you still feel you need personal coaching, you can apply that $597 toward the $5,995 coaching fee, as long as we enter into the contract within one year—and provided I believe we’re a good coaching/client match.

In other words, if you complete the 12-week course and achieve your goal without needing coaching, you’ve saved $5,448!

Here’s what one prospective coaching client wrote after taking my recommendation for the more affordable option:

“The home study is going great! I feel this was a better choice than coaching.”

Another wrote:

"Leslie, I think the 12-week program will work best at this point. Thank you for your honesty. I filled out the form like you said… here it is. Thank you!!!"
