New England's Dark Day
Jul 06, 2024
Every day it seems like someone is posting in local social media groups about their financial struggles—asking how anyone is managing to stay afloat in this economy. They talk about how no one’s hiring, how the jobs they do find barely pay enough to get by, and how inflation has made everything harder.
And it’s not just personal news—world headlines are grim, too. Record-breaking inflation. Political unrest. Deep national division.
While many are white-knuckling their way through the chaos, there are others watching the same events unfold with a surprising sense of calm—even if they’re feeling the pinch themselves. What makes the difference? A certain “setting” in their “thinker.”
And it reminds me of something we can learn from New England’s Dark Day…
The truth is, every adversity carries the seed of equal or greater benefit. By the law of Polarity, the more intense the challenge, the greater the potential opportunity hiding within it. Not everyone suffers the same through economic or global crises. Even during the Great Depression, some people thrived. And most of them weren’t getting their life strategy from the 10:00 news.
How we choose to respond to our circumstances will always determine how well we weather the storm.
Here’s a perspective to consider:
The very poor think day to day
The poor think week to week
The middle class think month to month
The rich think year to year
And the very rich think decade to decade.
So... how do you think?
The longer your vision stretches into the future, the easier it becomes to navigate the bumps along the way.
Of course, even with a long-term mindset, you still have to deal with today. So how do you move forward when your family—or even your country—feels like it’s standing on shaky ground?
You do your best in the moment, staying focused on solutions. Take care of the problem right in front of you, but keep your mind anchored on your long-term goal. Don't expect the tide to turn instantly. Face today’s trials with calm determination, even if it takes ten years to fully turn the ship around.
Make peace with the road ahead—but walk it faithfully, one step at a time.
New England’s Dark Day
I’m reminded of New England’s Dark Day of 1780, when the sun mysteriously went dark for hours. With limited communication and no scientific explanation, fear spread rapidly. Many religious citizens believed it might be the end of the world.
That very day, the Connecticut legislature was in session. As the darkness deepened, some members suggested they adjourn. But one man, Abraham Davenport, stood up and responded with remarkable clarity:
Whether or not it was the end of the world, he said, he did not know. What he did know was that he had work to do—and if it was Judgment Day, he wanted to be found faithfully doing his duty.
So rather than run in fear, he said:
“Bring in the candles.”
Let that sink in.
Are you facing difficult news today?
Whether or not this marks the end of the “good times” as you’ve known them, you still have a job to do. And so do I.
Even when darkness surrounds us, we must bring in the candles. Focus on the moment you’re in. Stay anchored in your purpose. Let images of future success fill your mind—and take action today that moves you toward it. Trust that God is guiding your path and that solutions will show up at just the right time.
Until they do, take steps to move the needle forward yourself.
Pray like it depends on God.
Act like it depends on you.
The worst thing you can do is obsess over impending doom and add emotion to those fear-based images. When the masses are doing this collectively, it creates even more energetic drag. But since we can’t control the thoughts of the world, we must focus on the one thing we can control: our own thinking.
That’s the most powerful way to weather any storm.
And really—what better approach is there?
