How to Prosper Despite Economic Crises

help with finances law of polarity leslie householder’s posts overcoming adversity Oct 18, 2008

With gas prices and the housing market doing things we’ve never seen before, it’s no wonder people are feeling anxious about what’s coming next—for themselves and their families. If that’s you, take a deep breath. Let’s walk through two things that can help you face it all with confidence:

1. The Law of Polarity
Inside every “bad” situation is an equal and opposite good. If it’s a little bit bad, there’s a little bit of good. If it’s catastrophic, then by law, it contains the seed of a phenomenal opportunity. Napoleon Hill said it best: every adversity carries with it the seed of equal or greater benefit.

So if the economy is really bad, that means something really good is also waiting to be discovered—maybe by you.

Global hardship often sparks powerful personal growth. People become more resourceful than they ever thought possible. They start noticing and appreciating the simplest blessings. They begin to emotionally detach from “things” and instead ground themselves in deeper purpose and resilience.

These are all incredible outcomes. Are they easy? No. But they’re like the fires in Yellowstone during the 1980s—fires that cleared out dead wood and activated the seeds for new life. Those seeds never would’ve opened otherwise.

Every financial crisis plants the seeds for renewal. So don’t despair. This is actually a great time to be alive—and to be raising a family. If your life feels like it’s about to change dramatically, let that change come. You have everything you need to bounce back bigger and better than before.

When the tide goes out, nobody panics that the ocean is gone forever. It’s just part of the rhythm. The same goes for the economy. It’s a cycle. Let the cycle do its thing.

And here’s the truth: not everyone suffers during economic downturns.

Which leads to point #2:

2. Be Part of the Solution
Ask yourself: how many people are sitting around talking about how bad things are… and how many are spending their time creating solutions?

This is a powerful time to be alive because wealth is created when problems get solved. The more problems, the more potential for abundance. Be a problem-solver, and you can thrive in any economy.

The best part? There is no shortage of problems to solve right now.

So, take a moment. Look at your gifts. Your experiences. Your personality. The things you’ve figured out. Even the smallest, most random problems you’ve solved—those count. Maybe you figured out how to deal with mismatched lids and plastic containers in the kitchen. Guess what? There are people out there searching for a solution to that exact problem.

Don’t dismiss any of your abilities as insignificant.

I know people who’ve written up how-to guides on solving quirky little problems and sold them on eBay for a dollar or two. It’s not about getting rich overnight—it’s about building the habit of creating something from nothing. Of being resourceful. Of stepping into the solution mindset.

Because the more you practice thinking in terms of solutions—rather than getting stuck in the problems—the more likely you are to stumble across the answers to even your biggest challenges.

So shift your focus. Look for what’s possible. Train your brain to seek opportunity. And remember:

The bigger the challenge, the greater the potential reward.
