Prosperity and a Portrait
Dec 03, 2006
In 1998, I visited the home of a friend’s parents. Their front room was spacious and beautifully decorated, but what captivated me most was an enormous portrait hanging on the high-ceilinged wall—a mother cradling her baby. Though the portrait had been taken decades earlier, the love and tenderness it captured were timeless.
At the time, I had just welcomed my third baby into the world. Seeing that portrait stirred something deep within me—I longed to have a similar keepsake with my newborn, a photograph that would capture the same cherished emotions of motherhood and family love. But finances were tight, and it wasn’t something we could afford. So, the dream was put on hold.
With each new baby, the desire returned. Yet time and money always seemed to be in short supply. I reassured myself that there would always be another chance, another little one to hold, another opportunity to make it happen. Surely, by the next baby, we’d have the means to do it.
Now, after welcoming our seventh—and last—baby, I knew it was now or never. There would be no next time. I refused to let this dream slip away again. Yes, money could always be used for something more practical, and time still felt scarce, but I wasn’t going to let excuses stand in my way. These portraits would be more than just pictures; they would symbolize motherhood itself. Baby Sarah, the youngest of them all, would represent each of my children.
There was still one more challenge—one that only parents of newborns might understand. I hadn’t anticipated just how physically demanding it would be. At only three weeks postpartum, the effort required was more than I expected. But I did it.
Why share this? Because I’m celebrating! Another long-held dream has come true. I’ve often said that the dreams worth pursuing are the ones that bring a tear to your eye—this was one of mine.
