Simple Kindness, Great Reward

The Law of Cause and Effect teaches us that every cause has an effect, and every effect has a cause. Or, as you may have heard it before: every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Just like a boomerang, your actions eventually come back to you—often in unexpected and meaningful ways.

It’s a true law.

When I started my travel business six years ago, I was completely in love with the idea. I knew I could succeed if I could just find people to serve. I didn’t have a marketing budget, so I did the only thing I could think of—I started talking. I told everyone I knew about my business. People at church, people in the checkout line, people in waiting rooms… if I had a pulse and a moment, I shared what I was doing.

And slowly but surely, the clients started to come. One by one. But I knew I needed more—I just had no idea how they would find me. Still, I believed they would.

Then, one evening, I got a phone call from a woman asking about a cruise she had booked. She said she wanted to make her final payment and that she had booked it with me. Her name didn’t sound familiar, so I asked where she lived.

She replied, “Montana.”

I said, “I’m sorry, I don’t have any clients in Montana. I think there may be a mix-up.”

She paused and replied politely, “Well, I have your website written right here on my piece of paper, so I must have booked it with you.”

Sure enough, she did have my website—but I wasn’t the travel agent on her booking.

Still, I took down her name, phone number, and sailing info and told her I’d call the cruise line to see if I could help. I warned her they probably wouldn’t tell me much since I wasn’t the travel agent of record, but I’d try.

She was so grateful I was willing to help.

I called the cruise line and explained the situation. Just as I expected, they couldn’t give me specific details about her trip, but they were able to tell me the name and phone number of the agency that did have the booking. I called her back, passed along the info, and she was thrilled the mystery had been solved.

With the urgency behind us, we chatted a bit about her cruise. I gave her a few tips about the ports and mentioned some fun things to do on the ship. She thanked me again and said, “I’ll call you if I ever decide to go on another cruise.”

I told her I’d be delighted to help her anytime in the future.

After that? I didn’t give it another thought.

Months later, the phone rang. It was the woman from Montana! She said the cruise had been amazing and they had a wonderful time. But that’s not all—she was also calling to tell me she had passed along my name and number to her sister, who had just gotten engaged… and wanted to get married on a cruise ship.

Over the next several months, I booked cruises for the bride, the groom, and all their guests. That little act of kindness to one woman in Montana ended up bringing me 30 new clients.

But it didn’t stop there.

Those 30 people started referring their friends and family… and before I knew it, 20 more new clients had found me.

Who knows how far the ripple effect will reach? All from one simple act of service.

So the next time you're wondering how to find more clients, remember: talk to people. Tell them what you do. And above all, offer genuine kindness—especially when there’s nothing in it for you.

You’ll feel great… and you’ll put a powerful chain of events in motion that just might bring you exactly what you need.
