The Law of Gestation in Action

The Law of Gestation states:

Everything has a natural season or “clock” for growth. A human baby takes nine months, an oak tree takes years to become a seedling, and corn is planted in the spring but harvested in the fall. The same principle applies to our ideas and desires.

When I found out I was pregnant with my youngest, we were already living paycheck to paycheck—barely scraping by. I was extremely careful about how we spent our money and knew we couldn’t afford another child.

So, I knelt down and prayed.

I laid it all out to God—as if He didn’t already know, but I wanted to be sure He knew I knew. Then I got bold. I told Him I was willing to bring another child into this world, but we were going to need help. I asked that my husband find another job with higher pay to cover the added expenses. I asked for a van so we could fit everyone, and a second car so we could both get where we needed to go.

A month later, my husband lost his job.
Four months in, he got seriously ill, and no doctor could figure out what was wrong.
The air conditioning in our only car died—right before summer—ruining its resale value.
And meanwhile, I was getting bigger and bigger with child.

But despite all that, we felt peace. A quiet, steady assurance that things would be okay. Somehow, we always had enough. Our bills were paid. Kind people helped us. Our family grew closer than ever.

Nine months later, we welcomed a beautiful, healthy baby girl.
Soon after, my husband landed a job that paid more than we’d hoped for. His health returned. We found a van for the family, a truck for him, and even sold our broken car to a mechanic who fixed it and still paid us a fair price.

Looking back, the one thing I wish I had done differently was to be more specific. I had asked for a better job—but I didn’t ask that it come quickly or that the transition would be smooth. I also think I slowed things down by stressing over how it would all happen, and more importantly, how I didn’t want it to happen.

So here’s what I’ve learned:
Know what you want.
Ask for it.
Believe it’s possible.
And let go of the “how.”

Trust that God—or the Universe—is eager to bless you and give you the desires of your heart. But remember: everything has a gestation period. Some things come fast, and others take time. Just keep believing until it arrives.
