The Real (but overlooked) Purpose of Action
Oct 10, 2017
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
~ Arthur Ashe
Action is a key part of achieving goals. But here’s the twist—action might not serve the purpose you think it does.
Let’s walk through the process of goal achievement, as outlined in The Jackrabbit Factor (free download!):
-
Decide what you want
-
See it done on the screen of your mind
-
Feel the emotions you expect to feel
-
Take action on the ideas or promptings that come to mind
-
Persist in belief and continued action until it’s accomplished
This success formula works—and the story in the book helps you understand why. Naturally, people have questions about each step, like:
-
What about God’s will?
-
How do I visualize something I’ve never seen?
-
What if I can’t feel the right emotions?
-
How do I know which promptings are from God?
These are all addressed in depth through the Mindset Mastery Program. But I won’t leave you hanging here. Let’s zero in on Step 5: Persisting in belief and continued action.
Before I understood the principles of success—or how to apply them effectively—I believed I had to take massive, heroic leaps to reach my biggest goals. But as soon as I ran out of steam, I’d lose hope. That wave of doubt was always the thing that ultimately derailed me.
When I began to grasp the power of faith and how it directly impacts outcomes, I changed my thinking. I started imagining that if I just kept pressing forward, people and circumstances were aligning on my behalf. I believed that everything I needed would fall into place at the right time. I didn’t have to go the entire distance—success would meet me halfway.
And when I truly believed that… it started to happen.
So here’s what my new approach looked like:
I pictured things coming together. I imagined blurry outlines of people who would show up to help—though I didn’t know who they were yet. I just trusted someone would show up when I needed them. Whether it was a mentor, a connector, a friend—I believed help would come. I kept taking whatever steps I could think of to keep moving forward.
Now, on the outside, it may have looked like those action steps were what got me to the goal. But the truth is, it was my belief that did the heavy lifting. The actions simply opened up pathways for money, resources, and the right people to find me.
Let me put it this way:
How easy is it to believe God will provide what you need next week if you only have one income stream—and you already know it won’t be enough?
Yes, God can provide, even if you’re living on a fixed income. But you must live by faith. You must believe. And if you’re struggling to believe, then one way to help yourself is to get busy creating new income streams—not because you have to do it all yourself, but because it helps you believe that God can and will send the support you need.
Belief is the key. But action is what helps you believe.
Even if you start something that brings in only $10 a month, you’ve gone from one income stream to two. And that alone can give your belief a little boost.
Over time, those streams can grow. And so can your confidence. And as your confidence grows, so does your belief—and your faith.
"For if there be no faith among the children of men God can do no miracle among them." (Ether 12:12)
"Behold and lo, mine eyes are upon you, and the heavens and the earth are in mine hands, and the riches of eternity are mine to give. Ye endeavored to believe that ye should receive the blessing which was offered unto you; but behold, verily I say unto you there were fears in your hearts, and verily this is the reason that ye did not receive." (Doctrine and Covenants 67:2-3)
So, have faith. And if you don’t have faith yet—keep taking action until you do.
Because here's the beautiful thing: action plays two roles.
-
Action makes things happen. It’s the driver of transactions, the force behind movement, the seed of change.
-
Action builds faith. It lays the foundation that allows belief to grow. It creates tangible evidence that strengthens your confidence in God’s promises.
If you see action only as the thing that drives success, then yes—you’ll probably experience growth that reflects your own efforts and ambition. And that’s great!
But if you see action as also the tool that fortifies your belief, you’ll tap into something far greater than what you could create on your own. You’ll align yourself with God’s bigger plan for your life—which I promise is more amazing than anything you could dream up by yourself.
So if you feel stuck or trapped right now, just do something. Take a step. Move your feet. Make a thoughtful decision and go for it.
And remember: the real reason for action is to build your faith—because when you act in alignment with God's principles, faith becomes the essential, irreplaceable ingredient for true success.
