Time For Something Else

Rhythm is the natural sequence of regularly recurring patterns. It shows up in all areas of life—as action and reaction, advance and retreat, rising and falling. It touches every part of us: emotionally, mentally, and physically. We experience joy and sorrow, sharp days and sluggish ones. We feel vibrant or unwell, hungry or full. Rhythm is everywhere.

It’s in nature—the seasons, the tides, the weather, the moon phases, and the planets. It’s in our bodies—our breath, our heartbeat. Constant movement. Constant flow. And within that movement, we find comfort, predictability, and balance.

But here’s the thing: many of us unknowingly let this law work against us instead of using it for us.

When we find ourselves in a “downpour,” the key is to flow with it—not resist it. Meet the moment without panic, and let faith and hope steady your grip while you focus on the “up” that’s just around the corner. According to the Law of Polarity, if the downpour is intense, that means there’s an equally powerful updraft within it. And with the Law of Perpetual Transmutation, those positive thoughts can help that updraft reach you faster.

In 2003, after a year of living in my parents’ basement, my husband and I—with our two small children—finally bought our first home. A small, three-bedroom, one-bath fixer-upper, but to me? It was perfect. I was thrilled. I could’ve stayed there 20 years—forever even! It had everything we needed and was within walking distance to the park, the library, grandma’s house, the river, the store, and our church.

But over time, the excitement faded. I started craving change.

We repainted. Pulled out the carpet. Refinished the oak floors. Still not enough. We tackled the windows, the roof, and the bathroom. And now? We’re working on the yard—because if we do it right, we might actually sell the house.

I’m also ready for a new environment. New neighbors—or maybe no neighbors. My next dream is to live out in the country on some acreage where we can't see another soul and have to drive to get anywhere. I want that now.

When we first moved in, I felt a high. Each improvement gave a little boost. But now, I’m not fixing the house because I love it—I’m fixing it so we can move on. What was once wonderful has become old. Dull. I’m no worse off than I was five years ago, but I’m reaching for a higher high.

That’s the Law of Rhythm in motion—if you know how to use it.

Life moves in seasons—figuratively and literally. Right now, I’m in a season of transition. We’ve never stayed in one house this long in our 12 years of marriage. It’s been a long season for us. Some seasons are short and sweet. Others drag on and test your patience. But with an understanding of the Law of Rhythm, we can move through each phase with more peace and purpose.

Our job is to stay focused on the blessings, stay open to the potential good, and flow with the current rather than fight it.

So be of good comfort and embrace the season you’re in.

As Doctrine and Covenants 88:42 reminds us:
"And again, verily I say unto you; he hath given a law unto all things, by which they move in their times and in their seasons."

And John 14:27 offers this beautiful reassurance:
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
