My Parenting Transformation Journey – Page 1

I know this might not seem like a typical post for the rest of my blog, but hey—it’s my blog, so I get to write what I want. 😉

Background:

Ever since I was a child, all I dreamed about was being a mother—and not just any mother, but a really good one. After marrying in 1991 and starting a family, I thought I’d finally get to live that dream. But life had other plans.

Financial stress hit hard and fast. Suddenly, motherhood wasn't the joyful, all-consuming experience I had imagined—it became tangled with the constant worry of how we’d pay the bills. From that point forward, every book I read, every seminar my husband and I attended, every ounce of effort went into one thing: solving the money problem so I could finally turn my full attention back to what I loved most—my family.

Looking back, I know I was doing both—parenting and pursuing financial stability—the best I could. But unless you’ve lived under the weight of constant money anxiety, it’s hard to explain how much it can overshadow everything else.

Eventually, we found answers. Seven years in, the lightbulbs turned on. We finally understood the principles of success we had been breaking without even realizing it. We applied what we learned—and within a short time, we tripled our income.

But instead of getting to simply enjoy motherhood the way I had longed to, I felt this undeniable pull to help others. I couldn’t just move on and keep the answers to myself. I had to share what we’d discovered with others still in the trenches.

Fast forward 11 more years. After pouring so much into events, trainings, and resources to help others, I found myself completely burned out. I knew it was time to shift. I had done my part. I had given back. It was finally time to return to my original dream—focusing 100% on my family.

Two years ago, I stepped back. I automated what I could, simplified my work life, and poured my energy into my seven children, who then ranged from 4 to 19 years old.

Despite the years of divided attention, I was proud of who my kids were becoming. In many ways, the work we did became a family mission. They learned entrepreneurship by watching us create and market books. They helped with events. They stepped up at home when I couldn’t be everywhere at once. They learned interdependence as they filled in and met some of the daily responsibilities that traditionally belong to the mother while I worked to create the tools and systems meant to help others (who struggle like we did) to find a way to put their own money issues to rest.

But stepping back gave me a new perspective. I began to really see my kids—what they needed, what they were going through, what they were working toward. Whether it was getting through an AP Chemistry class, making new friends, learning a new skill, or facing a personal challenge—I got to be present. Fully. And it hit me hard how much I had missed, and how critical this new chapter was.

So here we are, turning a page. And what’s surfaced through this transition is an eye-opening realization: I have a lot to learn. I'm beginning to see parenting habits I didn’t even know I had—like how often I react with frustration or impatience when a child shares a concern that feels minor to me, but is huge to them. I’m recognizing how unpredictable I can be, and how confusing that must be for my kids.

To help us make some meaningful changes before the new school year, my husband and I recently attended a parenting workshop led by Nicholeen Peck (she’s the mother in the video you’ll see if you click on her name). There’s a pretty cool backstory on how we ended up in her class, but I’ll save that for another post.
