Finding Peace

As I write this, there’s a deep sense of peace in the air—the kind that only comes when you release the illusion of control and surrender to the truth that a higher power can guide and protect you, if you’re willing to listen and act on inspiration.
As a society, we’ve become distracted by shiny things. Phones, television, sports, and other seemingly trivial pursuits have become idols. We rush and hustle as if time is running out, yet we delay the most important things—like spending meaningful time with our families and studying scripture.
I was raised in a home where family dinners were sacred. We gathered around the table, and no one lifted a fork until the meal had been blessed. Church was never optional. If the doors were open, we were there. We were taught to treat our elders with dignity and respect, and if we broke the rules, consequences were swift. We were polite, well-mannered, and we genuinely cared about our neighbors and friends. If someone needed help, we stepped in—whether we liked them or not. We set differences aside and did what was right, simply because it was the right thing to do. Family and faith came first.
The legacy my grandparents left wasn’t measured in financial wealth, but in relationship wealth. They taught us that people and relationships are what matter most. They showed us that a strong relationship with our Heavenly Father keeps us on the right path, giving us conviction when we stray and confirmation when we’re aligned with His Spirit. That open line of communication with our Heavenly Father is our compass.
At the time I’m writing this, a deadly virus is sweeping across the globe. The only way to prevent catastrophic loss of life seems to be for everyone who can to stay home. Our governor has issued a shelter-in-place order, and many other states have followed suit. Schools are closed, and children are being homeschooled. Sporting events, even the Olympics, have been canceled. Gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited, and churches have moved online. Many are now working from home. It might sound like a scene from a sci-fi movie, but this is our current reality.
Earlier, I spoke of peace—and you may be wondering how I’m feeling peace in the midst of all this chaos. Over the past few weeks, as events have unfolded, I’ve witnessed a shift. Parents are no longer rushing from one commitment to another. They’re staying home. They’re resting. Their spirits are settling, and slowly, the frenzy is giving way to calm. Families are spending real time together. Parents are rediscovering their children and realizing what incredible little humans they are.
Many have turned to scripture in search of answers. People are reaching out in prayer—maybe out of fear at first—but still, they’re opening that sacred line of communication. And I can feel the shift. People are starting to do the right thing, simply because it’s right. With all the noise stripped away, they’re hearing inspiration—and they’re acting on it to serve their neighbors.
So, where does my peace come from? My peace comes from knowing what I can control and releasing what I can’t. I can control my mindset, my beliefs, and my behavior. And when given a choice, I choose to believe in what is good and worthy. Over and over again, when I’ve come to the end of myself—when I had nothing left to give—I’ve witnessed miracles, simply by handing it all over to Heavenly Father and letting go of the outcome. In this crisis, I’ve watched people across America doing the same. What we’re seeing unfold is nothing short of miraculous.
I encourage you to find that peace. Choose to believe in what is good and worthy. Choose to stay calm and listen for that voice of inspiration. When it comes, step forward in faith. Trust that as long as you’re following the right compass, everything will unfold for your best future.
