It Is What It Is

The Law of Relativity teaches that nothing is inherently good or bad... it just is. It reminds me of a quote I hear all the time: “It is what it is.” Learning about this law was a big moment for me—it confirmed something I had already started to believe deep down: that even in our hardest challenges, there are blessings to be found.
I started using this law, unknowingly, when my kids were just toddlers and received their autism diagnoses. Raising two children with limited verbal communication and cognitive understanding brought more challenges than I can count. Our younger son dealt with intense anxiety and behavioral issues, while our older son began having seizures when he turned 18.
Most people who saw us struggling agreed—yes, this was hard. Really hard. I remember one moment that perfectly captures it: we were at a water slide park, and it was time to leave. I couldn’t explain to my son why we had to go. He didn’t understand that the park closed every day—he only knew that he wanted to keep going down that slide. And when we had to leave? The screams. The protests. The pure heartbreak on his face. I’m sure to onlookers, it looked like we were hurting him. He followed us to the van, screaming at the top of his lungs, hitting his dad’s legs in protest all the way there.
That’s just one example of many. But the truth is, even in moments like that—moments where everything felt out of control and impossible—I began to realize there was more going on than just pain. There were lessons, strength, and quiet blessings hidden underneath the surface.
That’s what the Law of Relativity helped me see: that the situation itself wasn’t “bad.” It was simply our situation. And within it, there were moments of growth, connection, and eventually, deep gratitude.
