The Resistance Game
May 17, 2021
If you’ve been following my story since 2002, you know life’s always been a bit of a whirlwind—seven kids, eleven house moves, launching books and programs, diving into homeschooling, learning to cook better…
(and let’s not even talk about the laundry—still not done).
You might also remember that with every pregnancy came a round of depression where, no matter how hard I tried, it felt physiologically impossible to stay positive. Maybe you even read about how I eventually learned to let good flow into my life in spite of me.
Even with all the breakthroughs and blessings that came during those challenging years, I often felt completely buried—overwhelmed by responsibilities stacked a mile high. But thankfully, sharing what I was learning brought me joy. And thank you for sticking around to learn from my mistakes and epiphanies. (It made the struggles feel like they had a purpose.)
The truth is, those challenges were gifts I was determined to conquer so I could turn around, share what I’d learned, and help spare others from unnecessary pain and heartache.
One moment I often return to is the time I discovered why “feeling buried” can actually be one of the most powerful places to be. I wrote about it in the post, Falling to Success.
Another major shift came when I finally saw how much of my struggle stemmed from being in resistance.
Because I felt buried, I resisted speaking at live events. I saw them as inconvenient, time-consuming, and with everything already on my plate, I couldn’t fathom adding anything else. Honestly, that’s one of the reasons I wrote Jackrabbit Factor—so I could share my message without feeling guilty for not putting on events!
But I learned something big: what you resist, persists.
I was in resistance to too many demands on my time… so the demands on my time remained. They buried me. But when I stopped fighting it all—when I finally surrendered—unexpected growth began to blossom. I explained that transformation in the story of the ambitious acorn.
In truth, that story is my story.
So here’s what I’ve come to understand:
If you’re in resistance to having no money, you’ll probably keep experiencing a lack of money. If you’re in resistance to poor relationships, you’ll likely keep facing them.
And for me? By resisting the pull on my time, my time seemed to disappear even faster.
So I tried something radical: I recognized the resistance and decided to stop fighting. I let go and went with the flow. Richard Bach’s story in my Be in the Prosperity Flow post really helped solidify that decision.
Here’s what that looked like:
I wanted more time with my family. So, counterintuitive as it felt, I stopped resisting the things that were pulling me away from them. I chose to say yes to more speaking events—on purpose, from the heart—even though it went against all my old programming.
Within just a few months, something incredible happened: I actually gained more time with my family.
Wild, right?
But here’s the principle: whatever you want to harvest, you have to plant.
Want an abundance of time? Give a little more of it—for a while.
Want more money? Release a little of it.
Want more respect? Give more respect.
Want happiness? Help someone else find it.
Want loyalty? Be loyal first.
As I loosened my death grip on time, our business grew. We were able to delegate more. I found an incredible assistant to help manage my load. We hired someone for order fulfillment. Suddenly, more time was mine again.
I started a garden with my kids. We went to the Science Center twice in two weeks (which used to happen once every two or three years). I cooked some actually decent meals (relatively speaking, of course), and we spent a day at a big bounce house place, creating memories we’ll never forget.
Nope—laundry still isn’t done. But maybe I’ll “surrender to laundry” and see what kind of growth that unlocks. 😉
By releasing my grip, life made room for me again. It’s a miraculous principle, and I hope you’ll take a moment to ask yourself:
What are you resisting right now?
When you stop resisting it, you may find your life transforming in all the ways you’ve been hoping for.
(And if anxiety shows up while you're trying to make a change, the Stickman Video will help you know what to do with it.)
Now more than ever, I feel joy in sharing these success principles—so you can enjoy more time and money freedom with your family, too.
