Honeymoon is over
Oct 14, 2013
Nicholeen Peck once told me there's a honeymoon stage when you're teaching your children (and yourself) self-government. Looking back, all of my previous posts about my Parenting Transformation Journey probably fall squarely into that honeymoon phase.
Lamenting sigh.
Then life happened. I had a business obligation I needed to follow through on, and it completely threw off my rhythm. It took a few days to recover and get back into the groove. That next Monday, I was almost caught up, but there were still a handful of tasks I had to finish on the computer. The constant interruptions throughout the day? Absolutely draining.
Eventually, the interruptions stopped. I finally found my focus. Whew.
At the end of the day, I emerged from my room to check in—see what everyone was up to, make sure they’d eaten, and start the bedtime routine. That’s when I saw this taped to my door:
"No one bother Mom!!! If you do you will Die"
Yep. There it was. Solid proof: the honeymoon was officially over.
And that’s why I’ve gone quiet for a while. I’ve been doing the work, just not writing about it. I couldn’t juggle both—at least not well. The process of getting back on track has been all-consuming.
But last Saturday, I had the chance to sit in on another class with Nicholeen Peck, and I was reminded of something powerful: The Power of Calm.
In just the past 24 hours, I’ve already used this one piece twice to gently sidestep what could’ve turned into conflict:
“It seems to me that you have something you want to tell me, and I really want to know what that is. But I need you to be calm first, so that we can talk about it…”
Baby steps to self-governing.
Baby steps to self-governing.
